Strategic Planning for Chamber Leadership
When I was growing up, my dad led the Joppatowne Football Program. Joppatowne is a small town in the Baltimore suburbs. In the late 90s, my dad faced a challenge. The football organization he ran was too small to compete with other programs that had more funds and players. His solution was to merge with the Edgewood Football program, a local town that was right next to ours. It was not easy. It took a lot of compromise and trade-offs, but after the merger, the two organizations became one. For the rest of my dad’s tenure, the organization was financially secure, provided a safe place for kids to pursue their football dreams, and created a few championship teams.

Building Your Strategic Plan
Running a non-profit organization has never been easy. As a non-profit leader, you can always benefit from more money, more volunteers, and more talent. Money, time, and talent are limited resources that are hard to attract without a plan. The resource below provides an essential building block for crafting a winning chamber strategy. The strategy has roots in the business world. But the fundamental idea of linking financial goals to customer goals, customer goals to processes, and process goals to people is a logical framework that can help you, your board, and other key stakeholders better understand how everything you do interconnects to achieve your organizational vision and mission. (Note: as a chamber, you have two customers-your sponsors and your members)
