From Overwhelmed to Empowered: Navigating Entrepreneurship

Recently, I sat down for a coaching call with a successful small business owner. On paper, she’s winning. She has two revenue streams: one that delivers strong revenue and another that provides fulfillment.
She started our session drowning in a sea of "to-dos" and heavy overwhelm. She felt like she was having challenges navigating entrepreneurship.
She initially thought she needed a session focused on prioritizing. But as we pulled back the layers, my gut told me she needed something much deeper than a reorganized calendar.

The Multiple Revenue Stream Trap
Many entrepreneurs are taught that multiple streams of income are the key to success. What “experts” don’t tell you is that multiple streams of income divide your focus, attention, and frequently result in slower growth. For this owner, having no two revenue streams had become a burden. She was trying to maximize returns on both revenue streams, a goal that seemed unattainable.
In a perfect world, we’d have 48 hours in a day to manifest every potential opportunity. In the real world, competing priorities make that impossible. She was faced with a hard choice: scale back her goals in certain segments or eliminate a revenue stream.
Navigating Entrepreneurship Misinformation
For many, "just quitting" a revenue stream isn't realistic, especially when one stream pays the mortgage while the other nurtures the soul.
The Main Hustle: The work you do because you’re excellent at it and it pays the bills, even if the passion has faded.
The Goal: The passion project that is scaling but isn't yet ready to replace your primary income.
This is a challenge nearly every entrepreneur faces. You are pulled between doing what makes money vs. what makes you feel good. Very few people are lucky enough to hit their financial goals doing work they love. There is always a transition between doing what you have to do and earning enough money to reorient your time toward things you love. Success isn't about an immediate leap; it’s about taking incremental steps to shift your work from have to do's to want to do's.
The Dual Burden: High Performance and Caregiving
What makes this transition even more complex is that life doesn't stop for your business. Many of us who start businesses later in life are part of the "The Sandwich Generation"—caring for children, aging parents, or both.
Running a business is hard. Being a caregiver is hard. When you are tasked with doing both at a high level, it can leave you feeling empty, out of energy, and—most damagingly—like you aren't excelling at anything.
Finding Grace in the Learning Curve
If you are a high-performing individual who has had a successful prior career, you are likely your own toughest critic. You’re used to being the expert. Now, you’re an entrepreneur, which means you’re a student again.
The combination of high expectations and the inevitable learning curve of a startup is a recipe for burnout and anxiety. To move from "startup" to "successful owner," you must:
1) Set realistic goals.
2) Give yourself grace.
3) Reflect on every experience as a learning opportunity.
The Power of Being Seen
By the end of our session, my client felt a visible shift. We moved away from the "to-do" list and toward a reflection on the positive feedback she’s received from clients and partners. We looked at her success in non-financial roles—like being a mother and a friend.
This deeper reflection allowed her to see that she was much closer to her goals than she realized.
Self-awareness is the primary goal of coaching. Unlike talking to a friend or interacting with an AI bot, coaching provides an unbiased, active listener who asks the powerful questions that help you see yourself for who you truly are.
ICF-approved coaching programs teach individuals that they are whole and complete and capable of solving their own problems. Our role is to help you see that truth, define who you want to be, and build the bridge to get there.
