The Strategic Reset: Reflect, Recenter and Rewrite

Sep 25
4 min read

The traits that propel leaders into senior roles, such as hustle, relentless execution, and taking personal ownership of every crisis, are often the very habits that cap their effectiveness once they reach senior leadership.

When directors, founders, and C-suite executives operate solely on adrenaline and unexamined expectations, the organizational costs compound quickly, resulting in frustration, burnout, and stalled professional growth.

On Episode 23 of the Coaching Gold Podcast, hosts Dr. Rudy Jackson and Dorian Cunion sat down with executive coach Lindsay Harris to examine how high achievers break this cycle. The central conclusion: sustained executive performance is not about increasing output. It requires structured reflection, energy alignment, and objective behavioral measurement.

The Trap of the "Shoulds"

As leadership responsibilities expand, workplace stress can grow exponentially. High performers often find themselves caught in a loop of setting and pursuing ambitious goals without the satisfaction of feeling accomplished.

As Harris shared during the episode:

"The load was getting heavier. And that decision moment for me wasn't just what am I going to do and how am I going to do it.'"

A primary driver of executive burnout is unexamined "shoulds"—habits absorbed from corporate culture or urban legends about what makes a good leader. Leaders assume they should handle every issue, should maintain constant availability, and should retain direct oversight of every high-visibility initiative.

These assumptions harm teams. A leader with unrealistic personal expectations can become a bottleneck. Delegation collapses, psychological safety erodes, and executives end up feeling completely overwhelmed by a need to be involved with too many details.

The Strategic Reset

To break the cycle of reactive management and executive burnout, Lindsay Harris developed The Life Edit—a structured framework that helps high achievers realign their daily work with core values. Within executive coaching, this methodology provides a practical blueprint for sustainable leadership:

1. Structured Reflection (Building Strategic Clarity)

True reflection cannot happen between back-to-back meetings or during an evening commute. It requires protected, uninterrupted space.

By stepping away from operational noise, leaders can ask reflective questions that uncover blind spots, unexamined problems, and systemic bottlenecks that packed schedules conceal. This deliberate pause helps executives move past inherited corporate "shoulds" and reconnect with their authentic leadership vision.

2. Recentering Around Energy and Working Genius

Executive capacity is governed by energy alignment, not task volume. Using diagnostic tools like the Working Genius model, leaders audit their weekly workload across three functional tiers:

  • Geniuses: Responsibilities that naturally energize you and drive high-impact strategic innovation.

  • Competencies: Tasks executed proficiently, but with zero energetic return.

  • Frustrations: Draining obligations that deplete cognitive focus and create operational friction.

Confusing competence with value is a dangerous executive trap. Spending substantial time on draining competencies diminishes organizational velocity. Recentering clarifies what must be protected, what can be eliminated, and what should be delegated to team members whose strengths align with those tasks.

3. Rewriting the Operating Script

Rewriting is the disciplined execution phase where new boundaries and operational habits are established. Leaders shift away from positional micromanagement toward scalable influence by:

  • Establishing non-negotiable boundaries around deep-work blocks and strategic planning time.

  • Designing clear delegation handoffs that transfer full ownership rather than mere task execution.

  • Documenting decision-making frameworks so direct reports have the authority to act independently.

By rewriting the operating script, leaders stop acting as organizational bottlenecks and build teams capable of autonomous, high-velocity performance.

The ROI of Executive Coaching

Breaking entrenched leadership habits without external perspective is difficult. Internal teams and boards often share the same cultural conditioning, inadvertently reinforcing the very behaviors that cause burnout.

As Dr. Rudy Jackson emphasized:

"Many people in corporate settings get leadership development that essentially starts and ends with leadership knowledge. There is nothing there to support behavioral change or real-world application."

Real executive growth requires diagnostic baselines, 90-day behavioral cycles, and 360-degree feedback. These tools verify that internal mindset shifts translate into observable business outcomes: lower friction, stronger alignment, and higher team engagement.
