The Human Advantage: Why Coaching Can Build Leadership Capabilities

In the latest episode of the Coaching Gold Podcast, Dr. Rudy Jackson and Dorian Cunion sat down with Demetra Moore, PCC, to celebrate International Coaching Week. The conversation centered on a profound truth: Leadership is a human-centric craft that requires constant "pivoting"—not just in career paths, but in how we think and communicate.


The Distinction: Partnering vs. Directing

One of the most valuable insights from Demetra's 20+ years of experience is the distinction between coaching and mentoring. Mentoring is "teaching the ropes" based on personal experience. Coaching, however, is a partnership. As Demetra notes, a coach doesn't need to be an expert in the client's field (she once coached a rocket scientist!). Instead, the coach's role is to disrupt the way the leader thinks.


The Communication "Spider Web"

Demetra identifies communication as the "red thread" of leadership challenges across all industries. She describes it as a spider web—a breakdown in one area (like an unnecessary meeting or a decision-maker missing from the huddle) causes the entire structure to vibrate with inefficiency.

Her solution? The Audit. Leaders must move away from the "way we've always done it" and actively audit whether their messaging is actually landing.


The Power6 Leader Connection: Coaching Builds Leadership Skills

The episode also pulls back the curtain on the Power6 Leadership System. Rudy and Dorian explain how the system focuses on two core responsibilities:

  1. Building a culture of teamwork, which is grounded in helping leaders establish behaviors that support the motivation of action, building trust, and improving productivity.

  2. Protecting team momentum, which focuses on helping leaders guide decision making, delegate effectively, and navigate challenges.
