May Group Workshop: Developing Leaders Within Your Company

I recently worked with a business owner who was ready to promote a top performer into a new Supervisor role. They had a great candidate, but they were hesitant. They’ve seen it happen before: a high-performing individual contributor gets promoted, struggles to lead, and eventually fails to live up to expectations, and either has to get demoted or leave the company.
We thought we could reduce the risk of this happening by being intentional about how we transitioned this leader into the new role.
Before selecting who would fill this role, we mapped what tasks we would need this person to do, and the skills that would help them do it at a high level. We discussed the "type" of thinking required for the new leadership role. We built a proactive onboarding roadmap that bridged the gap between doing the work and leading the people who do it.
Because of this plan, the owner felt more confident that they had selected the right person and that they had the right processes in place to help them take on this new pivotal role.
Most leadership failures start with a lack of clarity as people move into new roles. New leaders struggle to understand expectations, responsibilities, and how leadership changes as you move up an organizational chart.
When you don’t have a framework for defining roles or a roadmap for development, you’re gambling with your best talent.
