Low-Cost Marketing Support in Central Virginia

Building a marketing plan that actually works can spark new growth and open exciting opportunities for your business. While it may sometimes feel like an exercise in frustration, remember that every step forward brings you closer to meaningful results. There are experts who make claims that you will have more revenue if you boost your Facebook post, run Google Ads, or implement an email marketing campaign. The reality is that marketing is a complex, ever-changing craft that requires constant testing, learning, and adjustment. While we do not have a silver bullet for driving revenue growth, we can provide you with a framework to gain greater clarity on your marketing plan.

Three people smile around a laptop. Text reads "Building Your Marketing Plan" by Dorian Cunian, sponsored by local associations.

Marketing Support in Central VA

The following insights were originally shared during the DAA Entrepreneurship Workshop Series held at the Ashland Library on April 1st, 2026. Presented by Dorian Cunion, Executive Coach at Your Path Coaching & Consulting, this guide breaks down how to move from "having an idea" to "having a strategy".

1. Nail Your Value Proposition

Before you spend a dime on ads, you have to know exactly what problem you are solving. A strong value proposition isn't just a slogan; it's a formula that identifies your specific customer and their "job to be done".

Try filling out this template to clarify your focus:

  • Our product or service_______________________________________

  • Helps ____________________________________________

  • Who want____________________________________________________

  • We reduce  customer pain by________________________________and increasing a customer gain______________________________

  • Unlike the current alternatives______________________________

Here's an example using a fictional local coffee shop:

Our : Fresh Brew Coffeehouse

Helps: busy professionals and students in downtown Ashland

Who want: high-quality, ethically sourced coffee and a quiet, comfortable place to work or relax

We reduce customer pain by: eliminating long wait times and offering reliable Wi-Fi

and increasing a customer gain: providing a welcoming atmosphere with community events

Unlike the current alternatives: generic chain coffee shops with crowded seating and inconsistent service.

2. Conduct Research (Not Just Opinions)

Marketing strategy should be built on data, not just on your own personal preferences. The process involves five critical steps:

  • Define the problem customers have.

  • Develop a research plan to find solutions for customers.

  • Collect information from the market.

  • Analyze the information to find patterns.

  • Develop a hypothesis to test in your strategy.

3. Map the Customer Journey

Marketing isn't a single event; it's a journey from the moment someone realizes they have a problem to the moment they become a loyal fan.

  • Awareness: The customer realizes they have symptoms of a potential problem.

  • Consideration: They have clearly defined their problem and are looking for help.

  • Decision: They have defined their solution strategy and know they need a specific tool or service.

  • Delight: You exceed their expectations and turn them into a fan.

4. Prioritize Your Tactics

Startups rarely have infinite time or money. To execute at a high level, you must prioritize your tasks based on their "cost" in both categories.

  • Quick Wins: These are tasks that are low-cost and require low time. Think of things like "Refer a Friend" programs or basic networking.

  • Strategic Initiatives: These involve high anticipated returns but may require more investment. Examples include professional video content, workshops, or paid advertising.

5. Low-cost Marketing Solutions

You don't have to build your reach alone. In the Richmond and Central Virginia area, organizations like the Downtown Ashland Association (DAA) and the Central Virginia African American Chamber of Commerce (CVAACC) offer memberships that can amplify your marketing.

  • DAA Membership: Offers social media features, linked logos on their website, and vendor spaces at major events like Ashland Fourth Fridays or the Grand Illumination. Membership starts at $250

  • CVAACC Membership: Provides directory listings, custom advertising landing pages, member referrals, and discounted admission to networking programs. Membership starts at $300.

Implementation Plan

What do you want to accomplish this week? Pick one marketing tactic and execute it. Whether it is refining your value proposition or joining a local chamber, taking that first step is the only way to build a marketing plan that actually grows your business. If you are looking for a more comprehensive plan, complete this survey, and we will schedule a 30-minute free call to discuss your marketing plan.

On April 9th at 6pm, Your Path will partner with SCORE Richmond to offer a free workshop on Building Your Value Proposition.
