Command the Room: Elevate Your Executive Presence Through Practice.

Being a senior leader comes with the spotlight. Whether addressing your team, presenting to the board, or speaking at a conference, strong public speaking skills are essential for conveying your message with impact and building your executive presence. While some may be natural orators, the truth is that confident and compelling public speaking is a skill that can be honed with the proper techniques and practice.

Here are eleven strategies to elevate your public speaking and command the room:

1. Lights, Camera, Action! Use Video for Self-Improvement

Record yourself presenting. Yes, it can feel awkward, but it's the most effective way to pinpoint areas for improvement. Analyze your pace, body language, vocal variety, and those pesky filler words ("um," "like," "you know").

2. Crystallize Your Message: One Sentence, Big Impact

Before crafting your presentation, distill your core message into a concise sentence. This clarity will guide your content and keep you laser-focused.

3. Less is More: Maximize Message Retention

Recognize that your audience will only retain a fraction of what you say. Focusing on the most critical points makes it easier for them to absorb and remember your key takeaways.

4. Beyond Words: The Unspoken Language of Leadership

Your body language speaks volumes. Maintain eye contact, use purposeful gestures, and confidently own the space. A genuine smile and passionate delivery can captivate any audience.

5. Learn from the Masters: Study the Greats

Identify inspiring speakers and analyze what makes their presentations so compelling. Incorporate their techniques while developing your unique style.

6. Conquer Anxiety: Calm Your Nerves

Nervousness is normal. Develop a pre-presentation routine to manage those butterflies. Deep breathing, visualization, and positive affirmations can work wonders.

7. Practice Makes Perfect: Rehearse for Confidence

Schedule dedicated practice sessions. Rehearse your delivery, timing, and transitions. The more familiar you are with your material, the more confident you'll feel.

8. Master the Q&A: Prepare for the Unexpected

Anticipate potential questions and prepare thoughtful responses. Practice active listening and maintain composure, even when faced with challenging inquiries.

9. Offer Fresh Perspectives: Spark Curiosity

Go beyond the obvious. Share unique insights, compelling data, or thought-provoking stories to engage your audience and leave a lasting impression.

10. Humor, Sparingly: A Touch of Lightness

Used strategically, humor can build rapport and make your presentation more memorable. However, ensure it's appropriate for the audience and context.

11. Internalize Your Message: Connect with Your Audience

Practice until you can deliver your presentation without relying on notes. This allows you to connect more deeply with your audience and demonstrate true mastery of the subject matter.

Public Speaking: A Skill Worth Mastering

Like any skill, public speaking improves with practice. You've worked hard to reach a leadership position. Invest in your public speaking skills to maximize your impact and elevate your executive presence. Seek opportunities to present, be open to feedback, and excel. Each speaking engagement is a chance to grow and refine your skills.
